And Harvard Square continues to lose its landmarks

Link amplification from [livejournal.com profile] jadasc: Herrell's in Harvard Square is closing. Granted, I've been going there less and less over the years (I've long found Tosci's flavor palette more interesting), but it still held a lot of sentimental value from college, sitting in the fish safe with friends. It'll be missed...

Sigh.

Well, crud!

That's a bummer, both for nostalgic reasons, and because it was one of the few specialty ice cream shops I found which did really good / interesting ice creams and really good frappes. (Surprising numbers of places fall down on the latter.)

Now I feel old. When I first went into Harvard Square as a young adult, that was a bank. I remember taking little people for ice cream so I could see the converted safe not long after it became Herrell's.

Maybe the not-so-little people will take me to visit it some day after it becomes a pub.

... fish safe?

I have wished every day since Wednesday that I'd gotten that pint of Cambridge Lime Pie at Tosci's.

FYI, I'm not sure about the completeness of this article. The Herrell's in Harvard Square _is_ in the middle of a major renovation and has been closed for a bit but I was just in there on Wednesday. The signs out front say that they're "Expanding" not "shutting down." The owners have purchased the property next door and are knocking out a connecting wall. They are planning to add a menu of regular foods, but it didn't sound like they were eliminating the ice cream.
