Lack of data coverage—yeah, it's a weird feeling. Last year, we went to Ottawa for 4-5 days; I could have used my phone there, but AT&T's international data roaming is ludicrously expensive. Even the hotel WiFi was $15/day. So I was kept alert looking for free hotspots. And, of course, because of Firesheep, I had to have a VPN.
Next time we leave the country, I think I'm going to bite the bullet and rent a pocket hotspot from XCom. Really, travelling is when you most need access to things like Google Maps and information about local museums.
