Actually, I don't think that the problem is inherent in the monopolism per se. Rather, it's the downside of their fanatical attachment to back-compatibility. I can understand that attachment: people have investments in zillions of dollars of software that runs on the older OSes. But it makes them unwilling to make the sort of clean break that Apple did, and that *does* bog down the process horribly...
