Hmm; interesting question. Now that you mention it, there isn't an obvious reason, yet I find examples for it. The really interesting comparison is Britain, where a first-past-the-post electoral system still manages to sustain a viable third party. It's worth pondering a little what makes that work there, when it doesn't seem to happen here...
