Developers who create automated unit tests for their code, before it even arrives in the hands of the Test group, realize the scope, complexity, and sheer creativity necessary to produce good test automation.

A good book on automated unit testing, which also applies to further functional test automation, is "xUnit Test Patterns: Refactoring Test Code" by Gerard Meszaros
