Couldn't be better

I spent a couple of days with Flo and family, helping out a little. Flo & B don't get to spend much time together, because of the demands of baby care, his job, and trying to stay healthy themselves. I was glad to be able to give them time for a lunch out together yesterday. They have a careful sleep schedule. She goes to bed (in theory) at 8 PM and then they trade off in the middle of the night so he can sleep soundly before work, so after he gets home from work in the evening they only see each other briefly before her bedtime. Today a friend of theirs dropped by during their overlap time and was in the kitchen playing guitar, wondering what the children would like to hear. They don't seem to be much affected by recorded music yet but like having people sing to them. He picked "I can't help falling in love with you" and all of us sang along. A moment of joy for everyone, on a busy day.
Also in the kitchen is a ceiling fan, which the babies find fascinating. They may not agree on everything as they grow up, but right now they are unified in ceiling fan fandom.

Stanley Cups

Just curious, has anyone here heard about the Stanley Cup Trend? Apparently this is a Thing.

white people broccoli

A few years ago, there was a thing on Tiktok and Twitter to make fun of "white people food", like chicken breast and steamed vegetables supposedly without any spice or seasoning, even salt. At the time I got offended mostly about the "white people" generalization", noting Europe's native pungents like mustard. But. Read more... )

grid cities around the world

There's this belief I've seen, exemplified by a recent Youtube comment:

everyone knows that cities can have grids.

but show a grid city and everyone will guess it's a North American city.

most cities in the world grew organically so grids aren't a big thing everywhere else. you might find a few grids here and there, but that's it. going all out on grids is a North America special.

Life with two kids: death

Two days ago Sophia told us her thoughts about death. She had clearly thought about it a lot, worked through various things, and come to some interesting conclusions.

Unfortunately she told us all of this in front of Gideon, who has now spent two days bursting into tears intermittently and telling us he doesn't want to die.

I'm sure he'll also work through it, but in the meantime it's hard not to feel sorry for him. I suspect that starting school in two weeks and being away from home for a week aren't helping, as he's also intermittently telling us he wants to be back home.

Golden Literal Testing in uTest 0.9.0

uTest is a small unit testing library I maintain that aims for simplicity and convenience. This blog post explores the Golden testing feature newly-added in uTest 0.9.0: why it is necessary, what it does, and how it works internally. This feature was inspired by the Jane Street blog post What if writing tests was a joyful experience.

desk experiments

Dani and I both concluded, at about the same time, that our office chairs were past their use-by dates. We both also want to test a chair, not just order blind, so we headed off to a well-stocked office-supply store and found replacements. (As it turned out, we both liked the same model.)

While we were there I asked if they had any kneeling chairs, because I'd like to try varying my posture. I had one of those 30+ years ago that I liked (at work), but also encountered several I didn't like, so I definitely want to try first. (Also, I don't know if it's compatible with the arthritis that is starting to form in one knee.) Alas, the sales rep said, that business has moved entirely online, so I gave up on that.

I had a height-adjustable (sit or stand) desk at my last job, back before Covid. Replacing my current desk would be a pain (as well as expensive), but after we got the chairs I started looking at "adapters", an adjustable thing you can put on your desk to raise a platform rather than the whole desk. Many of them make strong (maybe even binding) assumptions about monitor placement that do not work with my vision, but eventually I found a "just raise this (basically) rectangle and don't do anything else" model with metal, not plastic, core parts.

Raised platform holding a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, with space behind; the L-shaped desk below has two visible computers, a headset, a coffee mug, a water bottle, part of a printer, and assorted peripherals and papers. The monitor shows a MacOS lock screen. A two-part footrest is visible below the desk.

With nothing on it the platform lifts easily (there's a control on one side). With a monitor that is well below the rated weight limit, the first few inches of lifting are a fair bit of work, and then it goes fine. Lowering is easy. I switch back and forth once or twice a day, so that initial push is ok; if I were working full-time and wanting to change it up every hour or so, it might be more annoying.

I thought of half of a second-order effect. With this setup, even with the desk lowered the platform is about three inches higher than the desk surface. That's ok, I said; I'll just raise the chair. I rejected similar products that added more "resting" height; I did think about this. The part I didn't think about is that I'm short, so that change to chair height makes the difference between my feet reaching the floor and not. So now I am experimenting with footrests, courtesy of a friend, one of which is visible in the photo. I think this is the style I want, particularly if I can get a wedge of foam to stick in there to hold the "V" shape.

It all goes to show that you can't change just one thing. So far, though, I think this is working out.

The things I do for story-building

I’ve lurked in the Transformers fandom soup for a long time, but only recently was I bit by a rabid plot-bunny. Not only did I have a lot of fun worldbuilding the planet Cybertron with friends…

… I decided I wasn’t managing to do a map in 3D that captured everything I wanted, so I bought a white beach ball and some dry erase markers to draw a globe map.

Verdict: I think it did work, but man, I wish it was a little easier to erase and redo. There was still staining on the beach ball even after I wiped it with alcohol…

I'm confused about Palestine and Gaza

I'm possibly being dim here, but I can't see what "Recognising Palestine" does for the current humanitarian apocalypse.

(I'm not against it, but the government seem to be presenting it as somehow connected and I feel like I'm missing something.)

No dancing has yet occurred.
