... or does "Known World Rattan Symposium" just sound utterly dippy? I get this image of a bunch of guys passing around pieces of furniture. Surely there exists a better name.

(Okay, yes -- "Known World Dance Symposium" is little better. But I've been arguing for calling that "The Laurel Academy of Dance" for years now...)

"Rattan" only makes sense if the main focus is the *rattan*. If the main focus is heavy list, it should say that instead.

I hate the term "heavy list" almost as much as "rattan". What we do is fight, or aguably "tourney". I would favor the Known World

...Fighting...
...Tournament...
...Chivarly...

...Symposium

Or maybe The Known World Symposium of Arms (KWS of Arts Martial)

Well, I'll ask you. Although they're good words, none of them would make it abundantly clear that it's not about fencing, equestrian, etc. How would you solve that problem?

"Fighting". Fighting isn't Fencing or Equestrian or any of our other martial activities. KWFS.

Here in the Midrealm, they use the word fighting to mean either armored or rapier - mainly because saying fencing isn't fighting is mildly offensive. Of course, they don't use epees out here, and if you fight with something as light as a schlaager, they make fun of you.

But armored and rapier are the two main uses, I think.

Rattan Symposium is funny though! And I do like funny. I think its Irony, though it might merely be sarcasm...I can never tell.

The term I read in a book once that I tend to use is "playing at the batons". It was meant to convey practicing with sticks instead of real weapons. I seem to recall this as being a period usage, but as I have no idea where I read it, I must downgrade that assertion to "weakly possible".

Perhaps you should consult with The Boftist. I'm sure he must have some cleverly correct phrase.

"heavy list" isn't really much of an improvement. I've been hearing the phrase "armored combat" from time to time, and it's the first (andonly) not-completely-awful descriptor that I know of.
