Sometimes, the ads just know...

So I just got up to the story about the twits who let WifeSwap misrepresent the SCA. That led me to a BBS thread where the couple defend themselves, none too ably -- as a lot of people there point out, regardless of how little "reality TV" has to do with reality, altogether too many people *do* believe this stuff. There's nothing in this exercise except tsurris for the SCA, as we get to spend the next year dealing with people whose first reaction is, "Hey, were you those loonies on TV?".

And there, at the bottom of the page, after that entire aggravating thread, is the advertisement: "Lower Your Blood Pressure" with this "clinically proven device". Perfect product placement, if ever I've seen it...

Did he write about that publically anywhere? I'm curious. (didn't see it in his most recent public LJs.)

At any rate, we can always say "Must have been Amtguard." Or whatever.

It was in his LJ. Let me check... in a locked post.

I'm a little shocked to discover that I'm on one of his filters. :-)

His comment was copied to a public post, with permission. On tribe.net, not LJ.

Will go look -- my thanks to both of you!

Thanks for the point-out. Prior comment deleted. (I hadn't realized the lock til you said so.)

One person on the Tribe.net forum was offering to buy him a drink for the good call.

That comment was posted to the Middle Bridge as well. It's public knowledge by now.

The more I read about the fallout, the more disappointed I become. 2 people have already been cornered by a supervisor on separate occasion, inquiring about their personal lives in the SCA (generally not a supervisor's business what goes on outside of the workplace, I would think). 1 person testified that her inquiry into a church in Midrealm as a potential event site was shot down, with the contact from the church citing that show as the reason for the denial.

This is why I was singing "Donahue" last night... Not so much the "people will do anything to get on TV", but moreso that people will believe anything they see on a "reality" TV show, and will run with the image they are handed to paint with a broad brush. :/

Yes, but the person who claims that the potential site turned them down stated (on the Mid's mailing list) that they were already a littl dubious beofre the show aired (She said it was a fundie church, among other things) and honestly, that person is NOT the most diplomatic of people at any given time.

Would've helped if she'd mentioned that on Tribe.net too. Without that, it seems to point the finger solely at the church because of the show.

Doesn't it, though?

Rhetorical observation

[identity profile] hfcougar.livejournal.com 2006-03-17 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
What I wonder is why fundies would be watching that show in the first place. I mean, if they're so upstanding and all...

That thought did cross my mind.

To reinforce for them that their way of life is correct and everybody else is wrong? Just guessing.
