On the plus side...

... what makes the situation a pain in the ass is that the spams are mixed in with a lot of legitimate edits that I want to preserve. The Rolls are old enough (and crappy enough Perl code) that I often discount them as a minor and disused project. It's kind of neat to see how many people are still using them on a day-to-day basis -- that makes it feel like the work of cleaning them up is worthwhile...

Would it make more sense to put in a captcha, and re-launch ab initio? I haven't looked at my entry in a decade, it's probably aged past value.

I think I've had an entry in there for nearly as long as they've been in existence. I updated it a little over a year ago. Yes, we consider it worthwhile....

Definitely worth the effort to rebuild - I reference the Rolls Ethereal occassionally, and have found them to be quite helpful. Wish I could help with the effort, but at least I can offer morale support while you do the cleanup...
