Babylon 5 as a philosophy tract

[Happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] gra_is_stor!]

I am amused to realize that, not only is the most accurate description of my personal religion probably "Minbari", but there are days when my personal philosophy might be best described as "Vorlon". Well, okay -- they are a bit too orderly for my taste. But I was thinking this morning about how deeply I agree with the statement "Understanding is a three-edged sword: your side, their side, and the truth"...

No truer thing has ever been said by a non-mathematician.

Strangely, I'm reminded of two quotations:

"Facts are stupid things," -- Ronald Reagan (meaning facts are non-thinking things, rather than useless things)

"Reality is what sticks around when you stop believing in it." -- (sadly, I'm unsure on this one; it might be Timothy Leary, of all people)

"Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away."

Philip K. Dick, "How to Build a Universe That Doesn't Fall Apart Two Days Later", 1978

Yeah, that sounds right.

Thanks!

Yes, happy birthday to [livejournal.com profile] gra_is_stor. I haven't seen a lot of posts from here lately, but hopefully she'll get the message.

Concerning religion and philosophy... yeah, me too.
