Sounds from Alternate Dimensions

I swear, Jedi *clearly* has the ability to open portals to other worlds, and cause havoc there.

I say this because, on a regular basis, I hear noises that sound like the entire house is crashing down: massive thumpings, clatterings and clangings, always followed by the sound of running feet. Yet, when I get to the apparent location of the noise, nothing is out of place.

Of course, there are other possibilities. For example, that the house *is* crashing down, and the cats are simply repairing it before I can get upstairs. But given their lack of thumbs, I think that Occam's Razor indicates otherwise. It's much easier to believe that the noises are coming through dimensional portals, as Jedi returns from whatever the heck adventures he's getting into over there...

You need some motion-activated video cameras!

Please tell me you've read On Her Majesty's Wizardly Service. ;)

*squeal* Another Diane Duane fan! I keep meaning to read that one, except the bookstore never has it. Is it only available online or something?

On the subject of these cats: I personally think Jedi is trying lull you into a false sense of security. Once you stop coming running to the sound of crashing, then he will make a big mess which you won't discover until later.

It's called "To Visit the Queen" in the US. Maybe that's it?

Novel. Spinoff of the Young Wizards series, and I believe it's written for slightly younger audiences. It's about cat wizards who manage the worldgates (essentially dimensional portals) in NYC.

Novel by [livejournal.com profile] dduane; actually, second in a series. (The first is "Book of Night with Moon"; the third is "The Big Meow", which she is writing on and off as a fan-funded publication as she can't interest her publisher in it.)

It's about wizardly cats who are in charge of the inter-planar gates that exist under major subway stations. You can see how this is relevant. ;) Same universe as the Young Wizard books.

I think [livejournal.com profile] galaneia has a copy of each if you want to borrow them.

I swear all cats have this ability to some degree. And they can work off each other's abilities The more cats you have, the more often it occurs. We now have 5 and I swear it's a nightly occurrence.

Sometimes they're actually opening portals to other dimensions (with bleed-through); other times, just to confuse you, they're just playing back recordings. They are most definitely not doing and then repairing damage; in addition to the lack of thumbs, menial labor (the repairs) is beneath their dignity, even to the end of confusing the human.

I read this to my beloved, who replied that it's not that they are escaping havoc in alternative dimensions. They have actually caused catastrophic damage to your house, and when you come to investigate, they simply swap universes and bring us into an alternative dimension that looks undamaged. So you need to check all your important collections, to be sure they haven't been turned into catnip mousies.
