Hrmm. Sad to hear, and like you, I find it good confirmation for what I'd intuited.
So the question is--what's the next Google? Where's the next well-funded place (by which I mean, "place that trips over a pot of gold", because VC is the opposite of this) that understands that new value comes from innovation? It's the nature of companies to innovate when small, and commoditize when large...and the nature of innovators to travel from company to company.
It's a rare place that can resist the urge to get big, or that can cordon off and protect the creative process from the pressures of "streamline it, make it as profitable as possible".
