Here's a neat thing, though, that I learned recently from the aforementioned friend who uses 'e': In contexts where one might use a pronoun that starts with a consonant and 'ey' (or 'e') sounds weird, it helps to think of 'ey' as starting, not with a vowel, but with a glottal stop. It feels a lot more natural when you realize you're actually saying ʔey.
