I muse that L. Frank Baum, writing in the early 20th century, really helped prepare me for life in the early 21st. He created the first transgender character I ever met (Tip/Ozma), and also the first deliberately gender-ambiguous one (in one of the vaguely Oz-adjacent books). Both treated with love, as interesting, but not freaks.
