About an hour after I got everything running again, I put in a request to have SSH enabled for the site. AFAICT (and according to the service person I talked with), part of their SSH setup involves breaking CGI access while it is in process. No clue why, but they didn't seem surprised when I contacted them about it.
I am *not* amused, but if they're telling the truth it'll all be working again tomorrow...
