Cassandrafreude

For those who don't know him: osewalrus is one of the smarter guys I know. He's a sometime Carolingian, now living down in DC and fighting the good fight to try and keep the government from totally screwing up our communications infrastructure. If you're interested in the legal side of how this all works, I commend both his journal and Tales of the Sausage Factory, his professional blog. Both are well-written and fascinating, even if the events he talks about are often rather cringe-worthy.

From his LJ a few days ago, a new word worth remembering:

In other news, I am experiencing Cassandrafreude. I have decided Cassandrafruede is feeling good from the pain others are experiencing because they did not believe you when you predicted something for the future, even though you are also going to get caught up in the awful events through no fault of your own.

The Art of Conversation is live!

After talking about it for several weeks, I've finally gone and created the new blog: The Art of Conversation. The first post there describes in some detail what it's going to be about, so I won't echo it all here -- suffice it to say, the official focus is Purposeful Online Conversation in Communities.

I know that a bunch of folks here are interested in the subject, so I'll gently push you all over to it: please come, read, comment, and generally join in -- it'll be a lot more fun if I have some friends along for the ride. I've syndicated it in LJ as artofconv (hopefully LJ will eventually update that); the feed is http://artofconv.wordpress.com/feed if you want to follow it in some other blog reader.

Please don't be shy if you'd like to post something there. While I'll be the principal author, and will be trying to keep it professional and on-topic, I actually think it will be a lot more fun if other people are offering their insights as well. The blog is going to be *about* conversation, but I'd like it to also *be* a conversation itself, among people who are interested in the topic.

"Ahead of the times" strikes again

Check out Google's latest venture: Lively is an immersive virtual world, kind of like Second Life, but browser-based and (I gather) trying to integrate more with the Web.

At a quick glance, it looks moderately close to what we were trying to do at Trenza, and perhaps even closer to my original goals when the VRML project started up back in 1994. (Although I doubt they've adopted the Portals mechanism that I've always wanted for navigating around.) Glad to see it actually happening, and slightly boggled that it's taken this long...
