Today in Stupid Assumptions Engineers (or Designers, or somebody) Make: that people have two phone numbers.

I ordered something the other day, and paid for it with PayPal. I use PayPal a lot, and am generally happy with it. (Yes, yes -- it's not perfect. Seriously, I used to work on check-fraud detection software: I can assure you that PayPal is a paragon compared to the traditional banking system.)

But I noticed on my receipt from the company that the phone number attached to my order is downright antique. Not just old -- like, seven-years-dead, my phone number from my old house.

So I went to remove it, since at this point we've cut the cable and are just using our mobiles. And what do I find? PayPal doesn't allow you to have fewer than two phone numbers. Like, it is literally impossible to remove the dead number without adding another one.

I'm not quite sure what they expect me to do here. I'm not enthused about adding Kate's mobile onto my account. And what do they expect people who really do just have one phone to do? That's not exactly unusual.

So: Boo to PayPal for bad design.

Yes, I'm going to look around online, but I find recommendations from friends are usually valuable, so:

Our current printer is pretty long in the tooth. We got money for a new one as a Christmas present from my in-laws, so I'm starting to figure out what we want for a replacement.

Considerations:

  • Obviously, it has to print reasonably quickly and well, but we don't need either professional speed or quality. (Implication: inkjet is a totally reasonable option, and all of my printers in recent memory have been inkjets.)
  • Color would be nice (and one of the arguments for inkjet), although it isn't deathly critical.
  • Being able to print black using, y'know, the black ink would be A Very Good Thing. (My old HP has a weird fondness for over-using the color cartridges when printing black, which I can only assume is so that they can sell more colored ink.)
  • Scanning and copying are both absolutely essential, and I need to minimize desk space, so we're looking for an all-in-one here.
  • Wireless connectivity is essential, since we have computers all over the house, and I want them all to be able to use this.
  • It doesn't have to be dirt-cheap, but not stupidly expensive. A few hundred dollars is fine; beyond that, I'd have to think about it hard.

Traditionally, I'd just go get another HP, as I've done for many years, but I've been finding them more and more grasping, and I'm getting cranky about it. The above issue with my current printer clearly using far more colored ink than is necessary has been off-putting; on top of that, I've been hearing rumors about them trying to lock out third-party ink manufacturers, and lock customers into idiotic ink "subscription" plans. So they've lost their pole position here: I'm looking at all the options.

So -- thoughts? Do you have current printers or companies that you would recommend or caution against, and why? All opinions welcomed, but please try to keep it civil.

Thanks!
