I seem to recall reading, not that long ago, that the state Democratic party leaned on all candidates not to attack each other. It seems previous history was that those attacks would then be recycled by the Republicans for the general election.
There was a recent thread on DailyKos about political advertising, and the differences in the political ads prepared by advertising people who are used to selling products for corporations, versus those by political consultants. The Spitzer ads they link to are particularly good examples of the former, and I think they're quite effective.
