We booked 2 or 3 weeks out, which only barely gave time for the Disney people to send us our tickets, contract, luggage tags, transfers, extra literature about shore excursions, etc. To the point where they used a courier service (DHL?) for at least one packet.
We didn't ask for a choice of cabin location, but were not displeased. If we'd been travelling with some other couples and wanted to room together we'd have cared about booking earlier to get a block.
