No, I think you're wrong when you say "there are certain areas where more experience and specialization become critical".
*Every area* is going to benefit from more experience and depth. And that means that it is rare to hire someone who has that experience and depth. Instead, you have to invest in them until they do. Six months is barely long enough to get a good grasp on how things fit together in a major project.
