The state of runtime optimization

I refer the hardcore programming geeks in the audience to this discussion on Lambda the Ultimate. The top post doesn't say much, but the comments get into an elaborate and fascinating discussion about runtime optimization -- static vs. tracing JITs (and the new moves to combine the two), and where things might go next. It gets into some new-and-different ideas, like distributed optimization in the cloud, and some serious power players (eg, Brendan Eich) show up in the conversation.
(Eich comes up with the scary observation that "JS is the X86 of the Web", which is true on *way* too many levels...)
