The movers come Monday, so we're getting down to the wire. But I just found another tidbit: a pseudo-Masonic diploma, commemorating Jane's father's initiation into the Solemn Mysteries of the Ancient Order of the Deep, apparently from mid-1944 when his ship (he was a naval Lieutenant) was bound on a wartime mission.

One learns a remarkable amount of history when excavating like this...

I've seen a few of these via television, most notably Michael Palin's round the world tour/program. His version was pretty fluffy.

My father has one from when he linecrossed. He also has some good stories about the experience, as a pollywog, and as someone 'enlightening' the pollywogs.

I have my father's, replete with the certificate (fancy!) and photos, circa 1938, as I recall. The US Navy ones are quite elegantly done, complete with dress-up as Neptune and his daughters on the deck (looks like they used mop heads for the wigs!).
