Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] siderea and others for pointing out the trailer to V For Vendetta. It's worth checking out.

For those not familiar with it, this is an Alan Moore story, my personal favorite graphic novel of all time. It's a fascinating story, about the evils of untrammeled government (and the dangers of the alternative), about true radicalism and about how people can be changed by it, all wrapped up in a yarn that is at turns rousing and bleak.

The Wachowskis (the brothers behind The Matrix) have adapted it to film, and are releasing it on perhaps the most appropriate possible date. I've heard that there are issues with the script, so we'll see how it comes out in the end. But the trailer is encouraging -- aside from the inevitably gratuitous special effects, it captures the spirit of the story extremely well.

Fingers crossed -- this story is even more timely than it was when it was written, and I am hoping it plays out well...

Big face on TV screen: Obligatory 1984 reference! (Though it makes many people think of the Macintosh commercial now...)

What's with all the throwing knives? I guess it looks impressive in a trailer.

Evey has no accent. It's weirding me out.

The visuals all look horribly off to me -- too realistic. I was expecting pastels. I guess I'm spoiled by the comicky coolness of Sin City and the upcoming Scanner Darkly...

Other than that -- V looks just right. They get the message right, at least to the first approximation. Could be cool. Time to re-read this one.

I figured out what was bothering me.

I always expected Evey to be played by Rachel Weisz. This might be partly because her character in Mummy was also named Evey.

He uses throwing knives a number of times in the book, most pertinently at the climax.

Hmm. I remember them being there, but hadn't recalled them being a big deal. Again with the rereading. ;)
