So I'm about halfway through the new Harry Potter book (I enjoy doing books on tape, but it's a bit slow), and I have to say this. The book is clearly going to have at least one significant cultural effect: the introduction of the word "snogging" to the American lexicon...

You mean it wasn't already there?

Mmm, snogging...

*chuckle*

I've been using the term ever since I discovered The Tribe (http://www.tribeworld.com/) on Wam! (very dirty pleasure... teen scifi soap opera engineered mostly to grow more native actors-with-experience down under) and was giggling inside every time I saw it in the book :)

That word is about 10 years old to me. Or more!

I know what you mean. While I was already familiar with the term I (I watch and listen to a lot of British media) I was quite surprised to hear a more insulated friend of mine use the term last week. And then I realized that she was a) refering to the book and b) had learned the term from the book days before.

On the other hand, I'm fairly certain that the term was used in Bridget Jones Diary, so that will have upped the American exposure to the term considerably. But on the other other hand, I think the Harry Potter book has a better chance of getting Americans to actually *use* the term as opposed to just knowing what it means, because of the wider demographic of the audience.

I parsed the subject as HELP more than once... ;-)

Oh yeah. I'd heard it before (no clue where), but I just saw a post from one of the teens in our area, and it was new to her.

Although I'd heard the term for years, I started using it after watching Coupling on BBC America. But I think you're quite correct that I'll be hearing it in my store now.

I'd known it from Britcoms of many years past, but yeah, I can generally tell when I've found something out of the mainstream. When I saw it in HP I too figured the kids would start using it.
