Okay, this article is officially Scary. Not "worrying", not "a matter of concern", but capital-S Scary. Even if all that's happening is that people are fleeing in fear of being detained (as opposed to actually getting "disappeared"), it indicates just how badly fouled-up the Body Politic now is.

How in God's name did we get from the optimism of three years ago to the return of McCarthyite society today? The government is getting downright reprehensible...

I've seen that link in a lot of journals, and... I'm not quite sure what I think of it. While it's very alarming and scary on the surface, it also strikes me as kind of incomplete, sensationalist, and full of conclusion-jumping. While I'm worried, I'm also remaining cautiously skeptical until I get some more information, which I didn't see while wading through the hundred-plus comments...

Ah, okay. I'm also glad this wasn't just me.

Not that the country isn't a huge pile of crap right now, but I suspect this one needs some research before we get all freaky. One person vanishing? He did, after all, say, "My Dad is gone..." before, right?
