Submitted for your consideration: a disturbingly interesting comparison between the two cultures. (It starts a few paragraphs down.)

I'm not sure what the ramifications are, but I have to admit that I find the discussion fairly convincing, at least at the gut level...

Disturbingly accurate. Though I would call the Laurels the Theatre Department, not the Art Department. They produce something everybody wants to see, and people tell them how good they are, but everybody does think they're a bit odd.

I've been saying this for years. I haven't done quite the one on one mapping he has, but yeah he's right. Swordfighters are football players, households are cliques. If you're not in the right clique, you're not worth talking to. I had always compared heralds to the geeks in the math club who appear on It's Academic, but his comparison may be closer. :D

Geeks?

So where would people like me, trying to avoid social cliques, peerages, etc. who go off and do oun thing fall?

On a whole I love the comparison.

Hurm. A lot of groups are like high school, though, when you get down to it. Even some largish corporate environments....

Yes and No

While I agree with all the comparisons, there is one big difference from where I stand--people seem to go out of their way to be nice to you, and encourage you, and constantly affirm what you are working on or doing. Which was sorely lacking in high school.

And, if your clothes aren't quite right, people will help you out, or tell you how to fix the issue, or point you in the right direction. Definately not the case in high school. (Coming up on my five year reunion...and not looking forward to it.)

Don't know what that means, but I wanted to add it to the conversation.
