Thanks to cvirtue for this utterly brilliant re-analysis of Star Wars IV - VI, in light of what we are told in I - III. It's really delicious, positing that the *real* heroes of the Star Wars series, right from the beginning, are R2D2 and Chewbacca...

Oh, yes -- but this posits that R2D2 is actually the spider at the center of the web of the Rebellion: not just in the right place at the right time, but actually the Rebellion's James Bond equivalent, *actively* trying to deal with the situation. Basically, it posits that Luke is being manipulated by R2 throughout (and, for that matter, that Han is being manipulated by Chewie). It makes an entertaining lot of sense, and it's not the way R2 is generally portrayed...

It also explains his surprising competence in Episodes I and III, especially given his apparent bumbling (albeit with good results) in IV, V, etc.
