Oh, well -- at least it's a good week for it...

Got deferred for the first week of federal jury duty, but it looks like I'm going to have to serve the other two weeks, starting this coming Monday. Please keep fingers crossed for me that I don't wind up on any long, involved cases: as it is, losing two weeks of work at this point is going to hurt like hell, and drawing a two-month trial would be Bad. Expect me to be a little incommunicado for the next couple of weeks, since I'm going to have to do eight hours of jury duty and then at least *some* work each day, so the project doesn't go too far off-course.

That said, at least it involves two holidays that weren't going to be productive anyway, so I'm probably only missing eight workdays.

Question to those who travel through downtown regularly: how bad is traffic on I93 early in the morning? I need to be at the Federal Court House at 8:15 each morning, and I have absolutely no idea how much time I need to allow for traffic at that hour. I know it's horrible by 9am, but I'm hoping it's not quite as bad an hour earlier...

At 8 AM, all the people who need to be at their desks at 9 AM are on the road, heading in. So no, it isn't any better.

I've never been called for federal duty, but every time I've been called for (local) jury duty there has been a lot of down time, including the time I sat for a trial. (I think we averaged under 4 courtroom hours per 8-hour day.) If they'll permit it, you ought to bring a laptop -- can't hurt, will probably help.

Nope, not an option. The federal court house permits Absolutely No Electronic Devices, Period, Full Stop. Not only can't I bring a laptop, I can't even bring my cell phone. They're quite explicit about that on the summons.

That said, I gather that federal is pretty different from local. According to my CTO (who has done federal once), they're more respectful of your time, and don't waste as much of it. So while I'm going to bring a *lot* of reading matter, I hope not to need it...

This is why you need a portable handcraft. Need to learn some basic knitting or crochet or kumihimo by tomorrow? We offer to teach, but you might have to come here, as I have papers to grade all day today, as does my roommate who is currently also offering to teach.
