The good guys win one in the Browser Wars?

Check out this report in All About Microsoft. Apparently, MS has finally bowed to public pressure, and will be making IE 8's new "super-standard mode" (that is to say, the mode in which IE is actually standards-compliant) the default. They've been resisting this, claiming that backward compatibility was more important, but finally caved due to various pressures.

Dare we hope that, going forward, we will get to stop spending half our Web-development time dealing with the incompatibilities between IE and Firefox? I'm not holding my breath (especially because it's going to be quite some time before IE 6 and 7 stop being problems), but it would be joyous. And just on principle, I'm happy that I won't have to include a non-standard tag to tell IE that I want it to follow standards...

FWIW, Opera, Mozilla and Safari react to IE's solution for browser compatibility issues

'Tis true, although I will admit to thinking of Firefox and IE as the Big Two. (But in theory I'm going to try to support Opera and Safari for CommYou, as well...)

I really just hope that debugging in IE gets easier, it is one of my least favorite parts of web development.

Yaas. I wonder if Microsoft has noticed that one of the reasons why the geeks are shifting over to Firefox is that it's so much easier to *develop* for? Firebug completely rocks my world, and it's a pity that it's so difficult to do anything comparable for IE...

Not quite yet, but soon -- it's expected to enter beta any day now. With the Browser Wars back in full swing again, Microsoft is coming out with new releases much more quickly...
