(Now all we need is for someone to win for msmemory, and it'll be an official tradition that the men of House Silverwing wind up as Royal Chew Toy...)

As etherial said. IIRC, the term was originally coined by/for baron_steffan, when 'Speth was reigning with Lucan. So liamstliam makes it a tradition, and a third would make it Sacred Tradition...

Oh, and I did not invent the rather unfortunate "Chew Toy" thing. My semi-official title was something like Queen's Privy Chamberlain.

...um. I think I might actually like Chew Toy better, aside from some apprehension about what Badger Herald and her crew are going to come up with for Coronation :)

We're working with either major-domo or Social Secretary at the moment, though I'll have to see if I can find a more appropriately period term.

I remember discussing this issue with Duchess Deshive when I lived in Caid. She said she would never dream of sharing the throne with someone she was actually romantically (and/or maritally) involved with; there would be no escape from it.

I was at the first Decoronation of Jafar (upon whom the peace and the blessing) and Katherine of the Midrealm. The visibly-pregnant Katherine called up her husband to give him some kind of award, pointing out that "not since the days of Arthur and Guinevere has any Queen been so well served by her Champion...."

I'm going to show my age here . . . but I believe the first time I heard "the Queen's chew toy," it was Sir Wolfgang Krieger (I think that's the right person - looks like Richard Gere?), who claimed that title. He was dating Margaret when she was on the throne with Master Ruslan.
