Some combination of age and exhaustion managed to get to me on Wednesday -- I only made it a bit more than halfway through the Grand Ball. (Granted, it didn't really get started until 9:30 or so, so "a bit more than halfway" was around 11:30. Still, I felt like a wimp.)

Walking back to camp, I realized that those bright flashes weren't cameras. OTOH, it was still clear overhead, so I took an unhurried walk home, and then pointed them out to those who were still awake. This led to much scurrying back to tents, but I decided to sit and watch.

It was one of those perfect Spielbergian storms that make Pennsic so much fun. There was bright heat lightning lighting up the sky once or twice a minute, but the storm came in at a slow crawl. So I sprawled out on one of the comfier chairs, simply watching the clouds going white -- first to my left, then to the right, then ahead, dancing around the sky in honor of the Ball.

Eventually the clouds covered us overhead, and I decided that the better part of valor was to retreat into the tent. As I went to sleep, the torrents started. But that was fine -- some heavy rain to replace the usual doumbeks, but still good percussion for sleeping...

Pennsic gets the nifty special-effects weather. I remember walking back to my tent one year while admiring the silent lightning striking from cloud to cloud above.
