Don't get me wrong -- I'm very fond of my phone. The Treo 300 is a true geek prize -- having a full-blown (if simple) Web browser on my hip is too cool for words. But it does have a quirk or two.

First of all, there's the screen: big, bright and colorful. It's very pretty, but it eats the battery.

Second, there's that phrase that wouldn't have made any sense until recently: "I crashed my phone". Fancy, complex gadgets come with fancy, complex software, which almost always have fancy, complex bugs. I'm not sure which program is at fault (if it's only one), but my phone has a nasty tendency to crash once every few weeks. It always recovers fully after a reset...

... but, remember what I said about the bright screen? When the phone crashes, it pops up a screen saying "Fatal error". That screen just sits there, turned on -- since the phone has crashed, the auto-off feature doesn't work.

Suffice it to say, sometime yesterday the phone crashed. By the time I noticed it last night, the battery had run completely down, and I'd lost all my data. The one saving grace is that recovering a Palm OS machine is almost as easy as backing one up, and I'm not awful about backups. I figure that I lost a week or two's worth of changes, which is irritating, but not the end of the world...

Actually, that's the reason I stopped using mine; it just wasn't very easy to reinstall my hacks and apps and all that crap. And since I was losing data on like a bi-weekly basis (Palm VII had an annoying habit of lying about how much battery life was left), I gave up...

Yes, but do you ever have to reboot your car? The a/c compressor and rear windshield wiper require me to reboot the car once a month or so (just turn on and off, because they don't come on correctly). It's just WRONG.

Gone to far...

It could be worse, if your trunk had a similar automatic hydrolic ejection system you might have to reboot your boot...

reboot the car once a month
Brings new meaning to the term car crash...

I learned of an interesting toy yesterday. Someone has invented the Internet Toaster. It's hooked up to a weathercast webpage and programmed with your zip code. The morning forecast for your area determines which picture gets toasted into your morning slice of bread. I'm waiting for a product review from Justin any day now! :D
