Just got my preliminary schedule for Arisia. It's entertainingly unbalanced, but likely to be fun. I have one panel on Friday, one on Saturday, and *seven* on Sunday. So basically I get to relax and see the convention on Saturday, and then go into full-scale Panel Marathon on Sunday, starting at 10am and running until 11pm, with a few two-hour breaks in the middle to eat and get my head together.

Should be amusing: I've never done quite so *much* blathering in one day before, but I suspect it won't be too hard. And the most important of the bunch -- The Future of Online Community, which I'm moderating and expect to be jam-packed with both people and ideas -- is smack in the middle of Sunday, so that looks to be the high point of the weekend...

There's a particular panel I'm wondering if I'm on. Actually, it seems a slam-dunk that I'd be on it -- so I guess I'm wondering *who else* is on it.

I've never been to a science fiction convention, but I skimmed over the web site after you mentioned it, and was entranced at the idea of the Steampunk Ball. Am I likely to encounter people I know there? Should I start sewing right away? Would it be possible to polka wearing goggles?

I think it's likely that you'd encounter people you know there -- I'd guess that something like half of Carolingia attends Arisia. (No idea how many will be at the Ball: I may make it to some of it, but my last panel is in the middle of the Ball, and I'm no sort of costumer.) Patri used to run many of the balls; I'm not sure who does it nowadays, but Barbara and family still tend to show up.

I'll warn you that the con is noisy and crowded and occasionally a bit insane, but it's quite a bit of fun. Buy your membership in advance, because they've been known to sell out at the door.

And Steampunk is *very* in. I was on the "Steampunk in Comics" panel last year, and it was jammed silly...

I'm currently on 10 myself, and I'm seriously thinking of trying to drop one or two. I've got 1 Friday, 3 Saturday (one is my half-hour reading), 4 Sunday (three of which are contiguous), and 2 on Monday. There are two that I'm less enthused about than others, so they'll be the likely victims.

They only put me on 4 panels, which makes my decision to drop Arisia this year easier to accept.

It does mean I won't be on an IP Law panel with RMS though. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

Well, it's probably good for the blood pressure, if nothing else. Richard is interesting, but I disagree strongly with his approach, and he's way too religious about the subject for me.

(And the GPL is a *horrible* piece of legal writing -- it annoyed the heck out of me the last time I read all the way through it. Too much agenda, too little clarity and specifics. I had one project that didn't use the LGPL simply because the company's lawyers refused to sign off on it because it was too damned vague...)

Well, the folks doing the scheduling are always trying to balance many concerns: scheduling hundreds of panels and participants is a really hard problem. So while I'm a somewhat extreme case, I don't begrudge them the result -- it's probably within the limits I gave them.

And it might even prove an odd advantage: it lets me really focus my "panel brain" on that one day, and mellow out for the rest of the con. If the Patriots had would up in the playoffs, I might be more resistant to having a panel Sunday evening (I actually wound up watching one of the most important football games ever at Arisia), but as it is, I'm more amused than concerned...
