Thanks to Aaron for the pointer to this article about the upcoming "Pride and Predator", a filmed adaptation of Austen with an alien invasion in the middle. Coming so soon on the heels of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, I believe we officially have a genre now.

If I am correctly interpreting the trend, the next version will feature Freddy Kruger, or possibly Pinhead...

And there's also Esther Friesner's 1991 short story, "Pride and Prescience," which I believe was the result of a challenge to write a Cthulhu mythos space-monster story in the style of Jane Austen.

Why only horror?

Why should horror fans get all the fun? Some other possibilities:

Steampunk: Clanks and Prejudice, in which it turns out that Mr. Darcy is a clank.

Space opera: Pride and Reaction Mass, in which the characters are crew and marines on a spaceship on its way to an invasion. Maybe the P&P characters are the only ones who are Victorians, and it turns out the planet they're invading is also inhabited by Victorians.

Fantasy: Orcs and Prejudice, in which the characters are busy fighting off an orc invasion, culminating in Mr. Darcy's discovery that Elizabeth is an orc in disguise, and he has to decide whether to kill her.

Dadaist: Pride and Rutabagas, in which Elizabeth is a wolverine and Mr. Darcy is a pineapple.
