The ad for the new Kia Soul is trying to look hip, and all -- the hamsters breaking out from their hamster wheels, and driving away in the cool car with their little hamster iPods and all.

But seriously: hamsters? I look at this ad, and all I can think is, "Boy, that's a *small* car..."

OK, I've seen it now, and, yeah, it's kind of cute. But (a) it's not cute enough, and (b) how, exactly, are they expecting to impress anybody by saying, "Our car is better than a hamster wheel."?

I think the interpretation they were hoping for (and clearly missed, with many of us) was that all the other cars are hamster wheels.

Picture the ad director saying, "Okay, find some other cars that this car looks cooler than, to compare it to. No? Okay, find anything at all that this car looks cooler than."

And thus, the hamster wheel.
