It says something that (I believe) north of 75% of the phone calls we have received in the past week have been robocalls for various candidates for Governor Senator (oy, I am tired today)...

Man, I hear you. And if they're not politicians, they're charities begging for money. (Why, oh why, don't these people use the do not call list. If I've indicated by putting my number there that I don't want to be called by strangers, what on earth would make you think I'd *GIVE YOU MONEY* because you called and annoyed me?)

That or it's bill collectors looking for someone else. Years ago I listed my number as just "K Smith". Lately that's turned out to be a huge blunder because now I'm getting calls from every bill collector who's looking for a Smith whose name starts with K - Kim, Kyle, Kristie, Kevin, etc.

Not to mention that the wonderful folks at Transunion put someone else's phone number on my credit report, and I suspect put my phone number on her credit report. She appears to be something of a deadbeat, so I get calls demanding to know why I haven't responded to letters that are going to an address not associated with my number at all. I've gotten her number off my credit report, but I can't do a damned thing about getting hers corrected.

I did recently change the name that appears in directory assistance to something completely fictitious, taking a page from Robert Asprin, and listed it under the first parts of my SCA name and my wife's. Interestingly it took less than 30 days for the first piece of junk mail addressed to the new listing to arrive.

Charities and politicians are exempt from do-not-call legislation. Feh.

I hate the calls (especially the robo-calls) so I sent messages to the six Senate candidates telling them that they will lose my vote if they call me (or send me spam). So far, Coakley's campaign sent me a note (from an actual flunkie) saying that I'm now on their do-not-call list and that they won't spam me. Pagliuca took the email address I created for this purpose and spammed me against my explicit statement (I've reported him to his ISP). Capuano has been robo-calling me. I've not heard from the other three.

Strange, I live in the same state, and we've been getting candidates for Senator instead...

For Governor? Admittedly, I'm not the news junkie I once was, but I tend to be what I consider reasonably well informed, and I wasn't aware that there were even declared candidates for Governor yet.

100% of the calls that did not give a Caller ID that I recognized were political in nature.

Several times I let human callers talk to the boys, who were thrilled to have someone to talk to about their champagne.

Yes, but the more people abandon land lines due to spam calls, the more the non-profits will have a case for being allowed to call cell-phones. :p

Does that say something about landlines, though, or just about political calls?

You are correct. We are "cell only". Zero calls about the election.

Ditto. Have been cell only for 6+ years and haven't missed landlines at all.
