I'm not really cranky today, but man - the afternoon was full of Stupid.  So while I wait for Niki to arrive, a few thoughts.  First topic: DC Comics.

I finally did this month's Previews yesterday, and as threatened, it was full of preening about DC's exciting new venture.  52 new #1 issues!  Don't worry about any of that boring old continuity - we're going to throw it all out and start everything fresh! and new! and keen! and full of exclamation points!!!

My reaction, predictably, was somewhere between "Yawn" and "Again?  Seriously?  How many times is it now?"

I confess, they've done me a favor.  I've been getting tired of much of DC lately, buying too much of it out of habit.  Some of it I liked a lot, but of course all those stories are now over.  And it's been crowding out potentially better new stuff.  So fine, this makes it easy - I'm now dropping *all* of DC.  I'm sure that some of it won't suck, but most of it will, and it's all too interconected - it's just not worth the effort.

So all of DC goes *plonk*.  This actually gives me a fighting chance of catching up on my back reading, and maybe, eventually, trying some new stuff.  Probably not what they intended, but it works for me...

Flashpoint has been exceeding my expectations. Whether that is because of lowered expectations or not is an open question, but I'm still reading.

On the one hand, this is the first time that they are actually (maybe) carrying through with it. Crisis was completely botched, as was Zero Hour, with neither being remotely close to a clean slate reboot, and I don't think there have been any other global attempts to do so. (That reached publication. There was the creator-proposed version back in the... early 80s? But that never made it past corporate.)

On the other hand, there's no real reason to believe that this will succeed any better at being an actual clean slate, or that there is actually any value left in doing so at this late date.

This won't be a clean slate reboot. Save for (at least early issues) of Action and Justice League, the books will be set 5 years into the superhero age. And Batman and Green Lantern, since they're selling relatively well, will keep most of their continuity (at least all four males have been Robins, all four (well, the ones usually seen; no one remembers Charlie Vickers) Terran GLs, etc.). Supposedly there's an internal timeline of what's happened that they say will never be seen by fans.

Yup. Can't say I blame you. Now, mind, I've never been as avid as you,
but still...gave up my Green Lantern subscriptions, and I intend to wallow in my 1960's-era continuity forever, nyah-nyah, NOT LISTENNNNINNNNGGGGG!

I mean, really guys. Seriously? The Absolute Ultimate Final We're Not Kidding This Time No Really We Mean It Crisis Across The Multiverses...until next year. Um, yeah. Right....
