If it tastes funny, look at your ingredients.  If an ingredient should have been thrown out in the previous century, you have a good candidate for what went wrong...

Oh my gosh, don't tell me you did that. :( Hope you're all right!

I remember an ex-BF of mine saying he'd learned to make gravy with whole wheat flour that he'd found in a cabinet in a glass jar. I replied, "Wait, you mean the whole wheat flour I left behind when I moved out... four years ago?!?"

We were at a friend's kitchen when someone asked for lemon for their tea. The friend didn't have fresh lemons, and took a bottle of lemon juice out of the fridge. The SellBy date indicated that not only was that lemon juice old enough to vote, it was literally older than the person who was putting it in their tea!

A person who shall remain nameless (but who I could be cajoled to name) made a birthday cake for a friend from a cake mix that had been in his mother's cupboard for as long as anyone could remember. At first, no one wanted to say anything, but once it became clear that everyone was eating only one bite, the truth came out. It was so bad it was given a name ("The Yellow Peril") and became the stuff of legend.

And here I thought that cake mixes had so many chemicals in them that they couldn't possibly go bad. Like the Twinkies that WALL-E finds. . .

Yeah, that's been the reaction from nearly everyone I've told about it. Probably what he was thinking, too.

I've been cooking in the SCA too long, I had to think about "an ingredient [that] should have been thrown out in the previous century" for way too long before I figured out what had happened.
