I'm still LJ-focused for now, but...

I have to say, Dreamwidth is looking more and more appealing, simply because the folks at DW are working so much harder to produce a good site.
I've finally knuckled under, and just started a full journal import from LJ to DW. Partly that's for backup purposes -- it looks like most of the old LJ backup tools are now dead. But more, it's because DW is actually searchable, and that does sometimes matter to me. (Like right now, while I'm doing the Timeline.)
I'm fond of both sites, but still mainly using LiveJournal. But that's increasingly out of habit -- DW just plain works better, and the differences are starting to really show...

Date: 2012-01-27 05:10 pm (UTC)There are so many other blog sites, and I understand why people go to the other sites. However, the problem of 'why do you blog' becomes more and more apparent every time someone leaves what was once their main site. For example, I have 5 minutes to check 1 site - but I don't have 30-60 minutes to check the 13 different ones my friends are currently on.
So, before you decide to switch over completely, consider why you write. Do you write for yourself? Or, do you write to keep your friends posted on what's going on? Not everyone will be able to follow you as easily if you go somewhere else, and you'll likely lose touch with people unless you're willing to put in the extra time to catch up with those who don't follow you. (OR if there's a cross posting feature, using that is nice!)
Okay, I am off my soapbox now.
I understand why someone would want to leave LJ, but I'll be sorry to see you go. I always wish I could search back posts. But, what keeps me from leaving is the knowledge that eventually my account will be canceled, and I'll lose ALL of my back posts - and that's history I'm not willing to give up for a little bit of convenience.
But, that's my choice. And I support you in yours.
Re: going to another site - my general statement
Date: 2012-01-27 06:10 pm (UTC)That said, there's a lot to be said for switching to *post* via DreamWidth. Remember, they're simply an updated version of LJ. (They started with the LJ code, but have been maintaining and enhancing it much more actively than LJ itself.) They know that their users are mostly coming from LJ, and they support that actively. Specifically, I'm already configured so that anything I post to DW immediately gets copied to LJ.
So that may well be the right solution -- I know a number of people who do it, and I might follow suit. I'd post everything to DW, and DW automatically copies it to LJ; everyone on both sites gets to see the posts, and I get DW's better tooling...
