jducoeurI'm feeling just a smidgeon guilty, having not made it to the Sci-Fi Film Marathon this year. (This is a 24-hour moviefest that runs in these parts every Presidents' Day Weekend.) I always enjoy it, but decided that it would be foolish this time. My health has been up and down, and even under the best of circumstances the Marathon leaves me with a bad case of Creeping Crud.

msmemory and I joined the rather extensive mob (16 people, if I counted right) that ladysprite put together to go see The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. We've been collectively looking forward to this for a couple of months now, and weren't disappointed. It is a full-blown sendup of bad 1950's Sci-Fi B-Movies, and it's terribly funny. While I wasn't choking as hard as some folks, I was giggling through most of the film and laughing out loud more than a few times.
It's really remarkably thorough. The script is utterly painful, with each cliched character given their own distinctively trite voice. The plot goes beyond lunacy -- about a third of the way through the movie,alexx_kay and I were agreeing that it was dangerously like an insane LARP. The acting veers from stilted to overwrought in that overly earnest Ed Wood way. The "effects", the editing, the cinematography -- it's all over the top perfection.
Mind, the movie doesn't take itself the slightest bit seriously: it's a parody, and knows that full well. But it manages to avoid Airplane-style mugging for the camera, instead having faith that it is funny enough without that. By pretending to be serious, it manages to be far funnier.
It's a teeny little film, which is getting teeny little distribution. But it's worth seeking out if it comes to your area, especially if you ever watched any of the classic bad movies...
