Okay, I'm coming up blank on this greyly unimaginative afternoon, so here's a challenge: provide an appropriate verb for the activity of trying to figure out who an LJ poster is from examining their journal and user info.

(Having just done this for [livejournal.com profile] ricevermicelli, which wasn't nearly as hard as usual, it occurs to me that I spend a good deal of time in this activity...)

Some variant of "scrying," I'd say. Hmm. LJ-scrying? Blogscry?

No need to make up a new word when one already exists. There's a phrase from contract bridge circles that ought to apply: "winkle out", means to figure out whose hand a particular card/cards has to be in. My dictionary gives the definition "to pry something out of a place".

I can't say with certainty, but I'd rate it over 90% likely :-)

It's certainly related, but I'm not sure if it's the right term. I wouldn't be surprised if the right term does exist already, though.

Cryptonomenclature?

De-nyming? Extraponaming?

Unmasking sounds slightly confrontational ... maybe decleverising?

Ah! As an antonym of obfuscation, which refers to dusk to imply darkening, "Eosation" -- as things become clearer in the dawn. (Or perhaps "anfuscation". "I spent a while trying to anfuscate 'museinred', but I gave up until she mentioned her LJ name the next time we saw each other in person.")

Am I the only oen here who realizes that the question you're really asking is, "What is the sniglet for this activity?"

This isn't just an LJ thing, you know; it applies to all sorts of online fora.

I like "winkle", but it seems to need something more specific, some constructed compound. "Loginwinkle", maybe; that's got a nice rhythm to it.

I know that "winkle" is valid, but I like the more cryptic/dignified sounding words like "decloak."

I think it's all about how you envision yourself in the process.

I often envision myself as a starship captain, so decloaking usually means that someone's about to fire that damned plasma weapon at me.

Tom/Vis (who will probably actually get an LJ account when I get back from Florida)
